[Shepard is always prepared to make sacrifices. It's a part of war -- a necessity for victory. People will die. But when the sacrifices start getting personal, when they start affecting himself and his crew, it's...different.

Which is why he so readily took a shotgun blast for Miranda without thinking about the possibility of dying...again.

There hadn't been a lot of time to think - it has been one of those no-decisions, where the course of action had no alternative. Telford has been shot before but he knows immediately that something is different about this, that this is bad.

The pilot in him had always figured he'd go down in his fighter jet. Somewhere among the stars in a blaze of glory. Maybe on a suicide collision course with an enemy ship.

Then again, saving a comrade's life is probably not the worst way to go.]

He knows she is supposed to die. He knows this, he counts the days he spends in France waiting for it. When the day comes and it passes, he expects Reavers, but they don't come. Days turn into weeks, and eventually he starts to think that maybe, just maybe, he was wrong.

And then they arrive. In swarms, descending on Reinette's house. He throws shut the doors and windows and orders everyone downstairs. It's only at the last possible second that he realizes what's about to happen. He can see it in the timeline, when a pane of glass breaks, that he leaps over to shield Reinette from the falling debris.

His side hurts. He manages to get to his feet.

"Are you all right?"

Silly, really. Surely he should have been able to calculate the speed of those arrows better, but they had just been a little bit quicker than he expected and the earlier scrape at his side slowed him down just enough.

Glancing down at the three thick-shafted arrows deep in his chest, the healer almost laughs. Shield as shield, right? Did it matter if it was chi or flesh?

[Saving people is just what Tim does. It's part of who he is, and who he is doesn't cope well with survivor's guilt. Stepping in front of the bullet meant for Claudia doesn't even require thought; he just does it.
