[Well. That didn't go quite as he intended. Hakkai had always known that they probably would not return alive from their mission, but he would have preferred to see it through to the end, rather than falling to his knees right in front of their leader.

Silly, really. Surely he should have been able to calculate the speed of those arrows better, but they had just been a little bit quicker than he expected and the earlier scrape at his side slowed him down just enough.

Glancing down at the three thick-shafted arrows deep in his chest, the healer almost laughs. Shield as shield, right? Did it matter if it was chi or flesh?

Slumping back, he sighs.]

...let Gojyo drive.

[The spray of blood from Hakkai's injury hits him long before he can actually react to it. In the horrific speed that had been the surprise attack, he'd only just managed to take out the archers... but not before Hakkai had ensured he, Sanzo, survived to take them down. As the man began to slump, Sanzo found the ability to move rush back to him, catching his fallen comrade. Even so, he couldn't speak more than his name. Beyond that, only a choking grunt of shocked disbelief.]

[The laugh brings up a splatter of blood from his mouth and he cringes in pain.] Gnnnh!

[He can't breathe right - punctured lung, Hakkai figures. The other two took lower, and one is straight though, pumping blood at an impressive speed. Large vein ruptured. Just a minute or so left.]

Sanzo... don't l-let Goku see.

[He must look like a mess.]

[Gojyo and Goku were further ahead. They---the blood. Oh God, what could he do? They couldn't lose Hakkai.]

Th-they're further... Hakkai, dammit.

[The blood from Hakkai's wounds was steadily flowing into his robes, leaving them red. So red. Just like that night---don't think about it.]

Hakkai, you can't fucking die. You're not the type to just die like this. If you die I'll drag you back from hell and kill you myself, dammit! Just help me to snap the arrows and you can heal yourself!

[Please, Hakkai. Please. Please don't die. Not now. Not after everything. The three of you...

[Another cough, and more blood stains his teeth, wetting his lips. He cannot heal himself; there's not enough chi when his life force is pooling quickly under his body and staining holy white robes a deep red.]

I'm... so sorry.

[Words were painful, and he groans, breath even harder to get into his only functioning lung as his body was struggling to keep the little blood it still had flowing. So this was how it would all end? Perhaps it was only fitting that the sinner fell first...]

Gojyo... will not reason. Don't... let him be a fool.

[His vision was going dark, and the pain was fading so a numb coldness. Dying wasn't too bad.]

[Sanzo's shell finally cracks as he realizes with horribly finality that Cho Hakkai is going to die. And it is his own fault for needing to be protected. If he'd been hit by those arrows, Hakkai could have saved him. Things would have been all right. He clutches Hakkai's body closer.]

Hakkai!! You bastard! You fucking bastard!! Why!? Why didn't you just let them hit me!? You could have healed me---you----ghghk...!

[With that name on his lips, Hakkai's heart gives up on trying to push around nonexistent blood. He goes lax in Sanzo's arms as life leaves him, and the yelling and swearing from the monk goes unadmonished by a calm voice and sharp smiles.]

[He knows Hakkai is gone. In that moment, he's lost a friend, a dear one. Gojyo and Goku would be returning any moment... and yet all he could do was hold Hakkai close and curse his own pathetic weakness. He'd once told the others he wouldn't pray for them if they died and he stuck by it. Prayers wouldn't help now.]
